Happy Homemaker Monday 07.31.17

Good Morning!!  Another week has flown by.  We have had some beautiful weather here.  Several days with a breeze coming off the lake, great for us, but not so much for the beach goers, the beach has been closed for a couple of days because of the strong winds and waves.  Many people don’t realize how dangerous a lake can be, especially one as large as Lake Michigan, the rip currents can be treacherous.  Our town actually had to take our floating water park completely out of the water.  Hope everyone is doing well.

RECIPE I DID TRY:

I did try the Chicken Pot Pie Crescent Braid.  It was really yummy and easy to make.  I cooked my chicken in the crock pot.  The cream cheese gives it a really good flavor.  Find the recipe here.

HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN:

Another Pierogi Fest has come and gone.  It’s pretty insane what the town goes through to set this thing up, and take it down.  It ended at 5 pm on Sunday, and the crews will work through the night to get everything cleaned up so first thing Monday morning the main street will be open again, and you won’t even know one of the largest food fests in the Midwest even took place here.  They estimate about 300,000 people come out for it, which is pretty significant considering our population is not even 5000.

As always the fest starts off with a parade of random floats and of course Mr. Pierogi, Ms. Paczyki, Halupki guy and the Buscia’s.  We even have Elvis in our parade (which happens to be my uncle).  The wackier the better.  The polish people that we are, after the parade we sit out in front of our house in lawn chairs and have snacks, and watch the various people go by.  We do see some of the parade, as it ends down the street from us.  It’s our own little tradition.

I met my sister and niece on Saturday morning for the Buscia’s Cooking show.  What a hoot.  Their theme this year was Christmas in July.  So they made recipes for when you have company come over for the holidays, and other Christmas traditions.  All of which I have experienced in my life time.  They started out making the Egg Nog loaded with Bacardi Rum, and moved on to make a Cheese Ball, Pierogis, and Roshkys (or Kolachkys).  The Buscia who doesn’t cook showed us how to make an appetizer by using White Castle Hamburgers cut into fourths with a toothpick in them.  It was a lot of fun.

Later Saturday afternoon Ben and I went out to get a Funnel Cake and we tried a Deep Fried Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.  He had his with ice cream.  He thought they were amazing, I found them to be good, I like my chocolate cold, and not soft and warm.  Him and Elijah had gone out earlier, and he came back raving about the Chocolate Covered Bacon.  My daughter was indulging in Pina Colada’s all weekend long, which I tried for the first time, and those are amazing!!  These are the non-alcoholic kind, I told her I’d be worried if they weren’t with her slight obsession with them 😀  I didn’t get an elephant ear, because she had gotten one Friday night, and said they weren’t that good.

That’s the big event here for the summer, once it has come and gone, you know summer is coming to a close.  There are still a few more fun things to do, before summer is officially over.

Good Morning!! These days are flying by, summer is fast approaching its end.  We still have a few more fun events to look forward to in town, as well as enjoying rides on our bikes.  We had gotten Ben a bike for his birthday, and we recently fixed a bike we had for Elijah to ride, so they are enjoying their bit of freedom to ride like the wind.  Have a great week!!

RECIPE I DID TRY/I WANT TO TRY:

I made the Mashed Potato and gravy bombs this week, and they were, well…the bomb!!  Ben picked out every flavor, and really enjoyed all his favorites together.  They were a bit messy to make, but I think it was because my potatoes were still warm.  It is probably best to mix all the ingredients into the potatoes and let it chill in the fridge. You can find the recipe here.

This is what I want to try next!!  Find the recipe here.

HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN:

Pierogi fest this weekend.  They have added a tween/teen section which looks like fun, with a human fooseball game.  Haven’t decided when I’ll venture out there, but the lure of Elephant Ears and Funnel Cakes is my motivation.  Next up will be the back-to-school event a few days before the boys start.

Wednesday night was Hollywood Cars Cruise Night.  It’s always fun to see Mater and Lightning McQueen in person.  The DeLorean was pretty awesome too.  Ben and I walked over there earlier to see if we could get a sneak peak before all the people showed up.  We did see Mater and McQueen on the truck, but the DeLorean hadn’t showed up yet.  See pics below in FAVORITE PIC FROM THE CAMERA.

My bike arrived on Tuesday morning.  Ben and I put it together in the afternoon and I was riding it by the evening. Yes, we put it together in the living room, it was too hot outside or in the garage.  We had a few problems with putting things on backwards at first, but quickly made the correct adjustments.  Once I took it for a ride, I did have to make further adjustments but it rides like a dream.  Sadly, as I type this it is in the garage with a flat tire, but I will repair once I finish this post, have no idea how that happened 😦

RECIPE I’D LIKE TO TRY:

Hopefully I’ll try this one this week.  We had a little set back in our kitchen, our fridge is on its last leg, but it is 20 years old.  So we ordered a new one, it was great everyone was having sales, but not so great when we have to wait until Wednesday to get it!!

These look pretty yummy, my youngest loves bacon and mashed potatoes and gravy.

HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN:

This Wednesday will be the Hollywood Cruise Night that my uncle runs.  Lightning McQueen, and the DeLorean from Back to the Future will be out there, going to check that out.

At the end of the month we have our annual Pierogi Fest, a weekend full of fun and food.  Maybe I’ll venture out this year.  In August the P1 Aqua X Jet Ski races will be back, looking forward to that again.

Good Evening!! I missed last Monday’s post, as I was preparing for the Holiday.  It’s a big deal here with it also being my youngest son’s birthday.  My brother and his granddaughter were here on Sunday for a visit.  My other brother and his family were going to join us on the 4th, but my sister-in-law got sick so they had to cancel.  More on our holiday below.  Hope you have a wonderful week!!

RECIPE I DID TRY:

I saw a video, and thought that looks kinda yummy.  My son and I are big mayo fans, so I thought it would be worth a try.  My Uncle is the event planner for our little town, so he is always out and about, and Saturday we have a farmer’s market on the main street, and he is always there.  My son walked over there to give him something for my mom and he sent 12 ears of fresh sweet corn.  So I made it that evening, and also tried this.  I really enjoyed it, my son, who usually loves everything, just thought it was okay.  It’s a unique flavor.  This isn’t the actual video I saw, and the one that I did see, showed that you also use melted butter on the corn as well, and that is what I started with.  I didn’t use the Mexican cheese, but the video suggested you can use parmesan, so that is what I did.  I also didn’t’ use as much chili powder, so probably not as authentic as the Mexican version, but hey, what can I say, I’m just a Polish gal trying to spice things up a bit. 😉

The funny thing was when my mom told my son that he was going to get 12 ears of corn, my daughter thought she said 12 YEARS, and she was like, what are we going to do with all that corn?  So that was the joke of the day for us 😀

HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN:

We started the holiday actually on the 3rd.  We had gotten Ben a mountain bike for his birthday, and it was in the garage.  So my daughter and I came up with a little scavenger hunt kinda thing for him to get clues that led him to the garage.  He was really surprised and enjoyed the hunt too.  Later that night we saw the fireworks, which we watch from the next block over from us.

So the 4th is a pretty big thing around here.  I didn’t have to work at my job 4 days prior, so that was nice, but I was busy doing things around the house.  I like to grill all my food the day before, and then I put all the meat in a roaster and turn it on to warm up while we are at the parade.  I was in the middle of a project, but I stopped in the afternoon to go pick up a new propane tank for the grill.  On our way home, we are driving down the main street, and there are chairs already lined up for the parade!!  So I tell the kids, we have to go back out and put out our chairs!!  Normally my sister does this the night before, but she was going to be sitting in another spot this year, and the spots were being taken already, in the middle of the afternoon!!  So we packed up the chairs and went back out and secured our spot.  Even took some rope and tied them all together.  A little ways down from where we put our chairs I saw someone had actually used a bike lock to lock their chairs to the lamp post!!  Yeah…they must be new in town.

This year the parade started with a flyover of two jets, and then 4 planes kept circling and doing tricks for a good 20 minutes.  The parade is always a lot of fun.  We came home and ate, and then the kids went with their dad to see his family, and I was able to enjoy some quiet time and relax.  This year I didn’t take a lot of pictures, I just wanted to enjoy it instead of trying to get a good shot.

FAVORITE VIDEO FROM THE INTERNET:

Coincidentally, there was a drone flying through our fireworks, the boys and I were waiting for it to get hit by a firework, but it retreated before the grand finale.  I also saw a drone flying overhead at the parade…maybe it was following me 😀  But it’s an awesome view from a drone.

FAVORITE PIC FROM THE CAMERA:

Ben was 7 when he first found this hamburger cake, and he has gotten one every year since then. This year he almost didn’t get one. But there was one left and sat way off to the side at the store, he just knew it was for him.  Funny how the cake is actually getting smaller and not because he is getting bigger.

HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN:

In town this weekend we had an 80s Live Music Night, a Sand Sculpting Contest and the opening of the Whoa Zone.

Lora & Kathleen

Friday night my friend Kathleen  who owns the Junkyard T-Shirt Shop hosted a 80s Live Music Night.  Back in the day, her and I went to several concerts together, and we still love our 80s music.  Our town has a small band shelter off the main street, the band performing was called the Breakfast Club.  They mainly played 80s music, but being that it was a diverse crowd, they also threw in some other stuff too.  It was packed, the weather was beautiful and I ran into a couple of old friends, so it was a good night over all.

Kathleen had a couple of costume changes, I thought the Risky Business outfit was clever, (she had shorts on underneath) and she was also dressed like Prince by the end of the night.  They had a costume contest, where this guy, dressed up like Boy George was among the contestants, and the Doc from Back to the Future.  Had I not had to work, I was going to let my big hair down and join in the fun, but that would have taken some time, lol.  I did wear my Choose Life shirt though 😉

This is the second year that we had the Sand Sculpting Contest, but it just hasn’t taken off yet, not a lot of participation.  There was a professional sculptor out there, they dumped 10 tons of new sand, and this is the sculpture he created.

Also on Saturday, the Whoa Zone opened on the lake.  It was a pretty cool day, so there weren’t a lot of people on the lake, the water is still pretty cold, but I know this will probably attract a lot of people on those really hot days.
