WHAT’S FEEDING MY BOOK ADDICTION:
I’m ashamed to call myself a book lover, haven’t read anything in awhile. I did finish the beta read, and it was a lot of fun providing feedback.

LOL CHUCKLES, AND GIGGLES:

RECIPE I WANT TO TRY:
Banana Split Ice Box Cake
This looks like such a delicious summer time treat!!

SUPERHERO SATURDAY:
So The Avenger’s for Superhero Saturday were legit. All along our main street, there were various vendors selling things. They set up the Superheros in front of the school. We had to wait in line, to get our picture taken with them. It was a long line. At first I wasn’t sure I wanted to wait in such a long line, I mean, if that was actually RDJ in that Iron Man suit, there would be no question, lol. But it was the main reason we came, it was a nice day, and the boys and I had fun even in the waiting.

Just after we started moving up in the line, the Superheros had to take a break 😐 It was supposed to be a 20 minute break which turned into 35, I was like what the heck, are they on Asgard time or what? So this is the video of them returning from their break. I don’t know who the little girl was, but one very lucky one for sure. That’s Captain America!!

The organizers of the event kept the line moving for pics. So it was pretty quick. The Superheros were very friendly, shook our hands, talked with Benji a little bit as we posed. When they took one look at Elijah, Thor was like, dude, you get in back with the Superheros.

There was another section that had Bumble Bee. This guy was there last year. The car is awesome!! There was a section where you could play bags, which also looked like Bumble Bee.

There were rock climbing walls, and bouncy houses, and then a whole section of vendors selling comic books and action figures, which is where they boys really wanted to go. Also a couple of boulders along the way, that the boys so graciously moved out of the way for me. Everyone is a Superhero on Superhero Saturday.

This is a story that I started as part of a writing exercise created by the illustrious Candice Coates.  The original was just a thought, hope this revised edition is an improvement.

Genre:  Drama

The Truth Will Set You Free

I thought if I could just keep moving forward. Focus on the future and not dwell on a past that I couldn’t remember. There was a part of me that I knew nothing about. I tried to not let it bother me, but it did sometimes, all on its own. I just don’t know where to find the answers, but I need to find them. It isn’t just affecting me, but it’s affecting the people around me as well. After another failed relationship, resulting in me needing to move out, I find myself today, packing up my things, again. My cousin Joseph is here to help me, I will be moving in with him until I can find a place of my own.

“Hey, Alex, I found this box in the basement with your name on it, what’s in it?” He carries the box over to me and sets it on the table.

“I don’t know, I never looked, it’s from Grandfather.”

“He’s been gone for five years now, why haven’t you looked at it yet?” Joseph questions.

“It’s probably just a bunch of the stuff he collected thinking I’d want it some day, I just never got around to it.” I say as I continue to box up some books.

“Remember how him and Uncle Charlie would play cards all Sunday afternoon? With a bottle of Smirnoff perched in the middle of the table to be shared between them.” Joseph laughs at the memory.

“Oh, but when they brought out the bottle of Wyborowa Blue Vodka, things got real interesting.”

My grandfather always told stories, he had such a vivid imagination. His stories always entertained us, we never knew if they were true or not, or if they were the mutterings of too much vodka and longing for home.

When the bottle of Wyborowa was empty, it was then that they would sit quietly and talk between them, speaking only in Polish, knowing we couldn’t understand them. I rarely heard the foreign language, it was just how it was, once your feet hit the shores of America, you left your old life behind, and painstakingly learned the English language, never indulging in your foreign tongue…unless your soul held secrets.

“Well, I guess it’s time I should see what’s inside.” I slide the box over in front of me and opened it up.

“Yeah, maybe there’s something important, why else would he give only you a box of stuff, I didn’t get a box.” Joseph grumbles.

I open it up, and just as I thought. Several decks of cards, some shot glasses, the pocketknife he always carried with him, that could be useful, I take it out and slip it in my jeans. At the bottom are two envelopes, one holds some kind of journal and the other has photos and newspaper clippings. I hold up the newspaper article and show it to Joseph, “It’s in Polish, that’s just like grandfather to give me something I can’t even read.” I shake my head.

I pull out some of the photos, the pictures were old, possibly foreign, one drops to the floor. I pick up the photograph and hold it in my hand, I can’t take my eyes off of it.  It seems familiar.

“Alex, what is it? Do you recognize these?” Joseph inquires eyeing me strangely.

“It’s…it’s almost like déjà vu…but stronger. Joseph, I think I took this photograph, but how? Why?”

“Look at the journal, see what it says. Let’s hope it isn’t in Polish.” Joseph says in jest as he hands me the envelope. I pull out the journal, there’s a lose piece of paper tucked in between the pages. I unfold it. It’s an official document from Poland. As I look closer I realize it must be a birth certificate. In large letters it reads: Alesky Zwierzchowski, and I recognize the date, it’s my birth date. Could this be my birth certificate?

I skim through the pages, I recognize my grandfather’s handwriting. I begin reading one of the entries.

Today is not such a good day. Those men demanded that Alesky give them the photographs that he took, but he refused. I love that boy more than life itself, but he knows no fear, and thinks he can change this evil world we live in with his camera, but it is not that simple. Alesky left the house before I returned home, he went to meet with these men. I knew where they would be, just as I got there, I saw one of the men strike Alesky on the head with a metal pipe, and when he fell to the ground the sound of his skull as it struck the concrete is something I will never forget. He was in and out of consciousness, I knew this was bad. I had no choice but to defend my grandson. I only meant to injure the man, but he dropped to the ground lifeless, the other man could not run away fast enough. I then took Alesky home, and called the doctor.

I turn the page to read another entry.

Alesky’s head injuries were severe, even though he is completely healed, the doctor said that he would not remember anything. My father told me to take him to America, where my brother already lived. He explained that when we enter at Ellis Island we give them our names in Polish. When they record our names in the manifest, they will be spelled the way they sound in English, which does not resemble our name in Polish. The Polish language has it’s own alphabet. It will be like we are given a new identity. It is a perfect opportunity for us to start a new life and never be found. We leave tomorrow.

My mind is reeling after reading this, I look at the photograph again and the memory and images all come flooding back. The two men demanding the photographs, I can feel the pain from each blow that I took, as well as the final jolt as my head hit the pavement. I subconsciously rub my head as if to relieve the pain, in my mind’s eye I see the man fall lifeless to the ground.

I look up at Joseph, he is speechless. I hand him the journal for him to see for himself. I examine the birth certificate again. They were right about the recording of the names, this has to be mine, my American birth certificate reads Alex Wiscoski, close enough.

I drop it on the table and put my head in my hands. I rub my temples trying to alleviate the ache that is trying to take hold. All I can think of is all these years…all these years, the truth was right here.

Joseph closes the journal and returns it to the box and says, “Well. I guess that answers a lot of your questions.”

I drop my hands and look at him blankly, “Yes. But it sure brings up a bunch more. Maybe it was better not knowing.” I reply.

“Denying the truth doesn’t change the facts. This is just a piece of the truth, find the whole truth, and I bet it will set you free. At least that is what they say.” Joseph shrugs.

I mumble to myself, “That is what they say.” Trying to convince myself that this is a good thing, as I put everything back in the box to be explored another day.

Good Morning!!  We are officially on summer break!!  Well from school anyways, I made a list of things I would like to accomplish.  At least I’ll have some free time in the mornings to get things done.  Hoping to get more writing in, AND getting through my Crayligraphy classes.  Today I plan to do just that, it is my birthday after all, but I will have to go to work in the afternoon.  Word Press informed me that I had an anniversary on the third.  I started this blog when I turned 40.  I cannot believe that it has been 8 years already, its come a long way, and I am so grateful for all the wonderful people I have met in the blogosphere!!  Have a great week everyone!!

WHAT’S FEEDING MY BOOK ADDICTION:
I am currently reading a non-fiction book called, The Power of Surrender by Judith Orloff, M.D. The cover says, Let go and energize your relationships, success, and well-being. It’s pretty interesting so far. Our summer reading program has started at the library, hope to read some for that as well.

RECIPE I WANT TO TRY:
This looked really yummy to me. I’m thinking that all the cheese is probably canceling out the nutritious benefits of asparagus, but whatever. I’ll let you know how it turns out, and if my kids will actually eat it, lol.

FAVORITE VIDEO FROM THE WEB:
This was just fun to watch, took me back to my high school days, these are pretty much most of my favorite rap tunes from that time.

FROM THE CAMERA:
Our new rain gauge in our backyard. The little bit of rain that was collected was after a downpour, amazing how only that much registered, it sounded flood-worthy coming down, lol.  The grass certainly enjoyed it.  The little gnome is our fun memorial to my dad. He had a white beard and mustache (not as long) but he used to lay just like this while watching TV.

Hugh’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Week 27 – Vintage

Hugh over at Hugh’s Views and News holds a weekly photo challenge I have wanted to participate in, but haven’t gotten around to it…until now!! When I saw this weeks challenge, I just had to join in. These photos were taken by my daughter, our resident photographer 🙂 she sees things in her own perspective, and I love that. The photos I am sharing are actually taken from my mom’s house, which is where we live. When people visit for the first time, they are fascinated at how she has it decorated. We have vintage things all over the place. She has many collections that she has on display, there is so much to look at, yet it is not overkill.

This is the photo wall filled with wedding pictures and family photos. Wedding pictures that are of her grandparents, as well as my dad’s grandparents. The old black and white photos, without any real happy smiles are hauntingly beautiful. It’s fun to see the family resemblances from generation to generation.

This is part of a punch bowl set, that was my great-grandmother’s.  The base of the punch bowl can also be used as a candy dish.  It is made of what they call carnival glass.  My mom no longer has the punch bowl, because it mysteriously broke.  My great-grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and when she was really getting bad, my mom was washing the set, being as extra careful as she always did, putting down towels, so that none of the pieces would touch any hard surfaces causing them to break.  When she picked up the punch bowl to wash it, it did not touch anything, yet it shattered.  She noted the time on the clock thinking that she would come to find out that my great-grandmother had passed, but that was not the case.  She still does not know why it broke like that, and she was not injured as well.

I’m not sure if I was supposed to share more than one photo, but this is the last one.  I actually just took this one.  It is in the little nook under our stairs.  An old typewriter, sitting on a Singer Sewing machine.  I just had to include the typewriter.

I absolutely love all things vintage…I have no idea where I get it from 😉

Happy Homemaker Monday 05.30.16

What a beautiful long weekend, the weather is gorgeous.  Kicking off the summer with some grilling today.  Yesterday I cleaned the garage, and got the grill ready.  I feel like today is the official start of summer.  Our town has a memorial service, to commemorate this day at one of the memorials in town, including the 21 gun salute, where they use rifles at the ceremony, and end it with the M80 blasts that are shot off just behind our house.  See video below, nothing says America like a 21 gun salute!!  Hope everyone has a great week, as we head into summer!!

WHAT’S FEEDING MY BOOK ADDICTION:
Still reading the book that I am reviewing. If my time wasn’t so limited, I would of finished it by now, it’s really good.

RECIPE I TRIED/ONE I WANT TO TRY:
OK…so I didn’t actually make this, but I did “try” it, as in eating, and it was delicious!! My mom made a cake using just an Angel Food cake mix and Cherry Pie Filling. You mix the two together, and bake it. Top it with Cool Whip, and it is delicious!! The sweet fruity flavor, along with the light airiness of the Angel Food, topped with Cool Whip is just really refreshing, a great summer-time cake.

FAVORITE VIDEO FROM MY PHONE:

Our flag in front of our house blowing in the cool breeze this beautiful Memorial Day, as the 21 gun salute commenced.

CREATIVE CORNER:
I have yet to get into my hand lettering lessons, UGH!! I’ve signed up for a class where this guy teaches calligraphy using Crayola markers, he calls it Crayligraphy. I am planning on doing some today.

But my sons are always being creative with their Legos. Together they have been doing stop motion videos, and created their own You Tube channel for it, check it out or share it with your kids. It’s amazing how there is a whole community for the customizing of the Lego mini figures. Elijah has entered a couple of contests and has actually held a few of his own. Great outlet for kids!!
